Opera Skaala: Endlessness

Opera Skaala: Endlessness

Endlessness is an arresting, confusing and compelling piece, delving deep into the human tendency to believe in conspiracy theories and to fall down the rabbit hole so deep that one’s own reason and common sense are compromised. It is about climate change but asserts that there is no climate change.
Composer Lauri Mäntysaari and librettist Henriikka Tavi collaborated to produce a show that challenges the conventions of stage performances, being cast as a public lecture reminiscent of impassioned ‘TED Talks’ and occasionally venturing into the world of absurd storytelling. Soprano Tuuli Lindberg plays a character who is trying to reverse climate change and introduce a new world order and finally goes completely off the deep end – but will she eventually snap out of it?
Performing with Lindeberg are clarinettist Hanna Hujanen and pianist Elisa Järvi, playing an instrument she has developed herself, a quarter-tone piano. Just like the mind of a conspiracy theorist slips between the cracks, the sound world of Endlessness falls between the notes and explores some very strange territory. There are no words to describe this; it must be experienced.
