IRTP Excursion day June 29, 2024 | Book a place now!

A warm welcome along on the IRTP 2024 conference Saturday field trip Saturday June 29th!

This excursion day will take you to Själö (Seili) island by ferry, an island in the nearby archipelago. On this beautiful island a leper colony was established by order of the Swedish king in 1619. As leprosy began to disappear from Finland during the 18th century, a mental asylum was built on the main island where for women that needed caretaking, or, in some instances, were seen as ‘difficult’ by their families or the society. The historical buildings are still used, nowdays by the Turku university and a as tourism facilities, and the beautiful island is well worth a visit both for its history and for the special nature and culture surroundings.

The excursion day will look like this:

  • 10:00 Pickup from your hotel Kalkstrand, Pargas. If you are checking out from the hotel, please check out well before 10am, and place your luggage in the hotel luggage room reserved for the conferance, the bus will take you to the hotel after the excursion in order to get the luggage before taking those who want to the bus station.
  • 10:20 Stop at Sattmark Café. Sattmark cottage is a idyllic cottage from the 18th century, representing the traditional way of building in the archipelago.
